Obama's hopeful commencement message: 'We are all Big Guvmint'

When I read this article I finally understood why Sarah Palin ditched her job as Alaska's governor: as somebody who believes gov't is inherently evil, Palin couldn't stand herself anymore. We can only hope that if she runs for president and wins that she'll become disgusted with herself again, this time for being the Big Governor In-Chief, and quit again.

Obama Takes Direct Aim at Anti-Government Rhetoric
May 1, 2010 | Associated Press

President Obama took aim Saturday at the angry rhetoric of those who denigrate government as "inherently bad" and said their off-base line of attack ignores the fact that in a democracy, "government is us."

Obama used his commencement speech at the University of Michigan to respond to foes who portray government as oppressive and tyrannical -- and to warn that overheated language can signal extremists that "perhaps violence is ... justifiable."

Just 45 miles from the immense Michigan Stadium, capacity 106,201, the GOP's 2008 vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, told an anti-tax gathering Obama's policies are "big government" recipes that are "intrusive" in the lives of average Americans.

Obama urged both sides in the political debate to tone it down. "Throwing around phrases like 'socialists' and 'Soviet-style takeover,' 'fascists' and 'right-wing nut' -- that may grab headlines," he said. But it also "closes the door to the possibility of compromise."

  1. This morning I woke to my alarm clock powered by electricity
generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US
Department of Energy. I then took a shower in the clean water
provided by the municipal water utility. After that, I turned
on the television to one of the channels regulated by the Federal
Communications Commission to see what the National Weather Service
of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration
determined the weather was going to be like using satellites
designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast
of US Department of Agriculture inspected food and taking drugs
that have been determined as safe by the Food and Drug
Administration. At the appropriate time as regulated by the US
Congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards
and Technology and the US Naval Observatory, I get into my
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved automobile
and set out on the roads built by the local, state and federal
departments of transportation, stopping to purchase
fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental
Protection Agency, using legal tender issued by the Federal
Reserve Bank. On the way out the door, I deposit any mail I have
to the US Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public
school. After work, I drive my NHTSA car on the DOT roads to my
home, which has not burned down in my absence because of the state
and local building codes and fire marshal's inspection and was not
plundered of all its valuables thanks to the local police
department. I then log on to the internet which was developed by
the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects
Administration and post on freerepublic.com and Fox News forums
about how SOCIALISM is BAD because the government can’t do anything right.
