Russian harbinger: 'Russian Facebook' founder flees country

I don't harbor any affection for the founder of Facebook knock-off VKontakte (VK, for short) Pavel Durov -- I noted back in May 2012 how he was a spoiled rich a-hole. Yet undoubtedly, Durov's fleeing Russia is a harbinger of an even more despotic rule to come under Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

VK, which largely resembles an older version of Facebook, attracts about 60 million users daily, primarily from countries in the former Soviet Union, vastly outstripping Facebook's reach in the region. It played an instrumental role in bringing hundreds of thousands of protesters into the streets in late 2011 in the wake of widely manipulated parliamentary elections, and it has played a part in drawing crowds to the Kiev protest movement that helped oust Ukraine's pro-Russian president in February.

As many others have predicted, Putin's strong-armed adventures abroad must certainly coincide with a stronger hand at home against Russian dissidents, journalists, academics, ethnic and other minorities, and entrepreneurs.  Putin simply cannot allow a version of reality that isn't his own.

As AP noted:

On Tuesday, the Russian parliament passed a law requiring social media websites to keep their servers in Russia and save all information about their users for at least half a year. The same law, which will go into effect in August if signed by Putin, gave bloggers the same legal status — and responsibilities — as media outlets, making them more vulnerable to accusations of libel or extremism.

Durov said "we held out for seven and a half years," meaning VK held some semblance of freedom despite Putin. But a threat to autocracy anywhere is a threat to autocracy everywhere; and threats cannot be tolerated.

Simpson debases himself before kids for his CEO paymasters

Hey, you kids, get hip to the national debt, yo!  'Cos nothing is more ironically cool than an old fogey lecturing at you while pretending to care about youth culture!

That's right, get with it, and then "start using those precious social media skills" to convince everybody to slash Grandma's Medicare/Medicaid and cut their Social Security benefits and hand them over to Wall St.

And don't forget to Instagram it for ex-Senator Alan Simpson as you throw Grandma from the train!

Former Sen. Alan Simpson is going to new lengths to wake up Washington to the need for a debt deal -- this time, dancing to "Gangnam Style" in a viral YouTube video.

The sharp-witted, sharp-tongued, 81-year-old budget guru played along for a video by The Can Kicks Back, a group that aims to enlist young Americans in pressuring Washington to reach a deficit-reduction deal by July 2013.

In the video, Simpson tells today's youth: "Stop Instagramming your breakfast and tweeting your firstworldproblems and getting on YouTube so you can see Gangnam Style."

Nothing if not a good sport, Simpson proceeds to imitate the limber moves of South Korean rapping sensation PSY while his "Gangnam Style" hit plays in the background.

Simpson urges young American to put "those precious social media skills" to good use. "Take part or get taken apart," he says.

Simpson co-chaired President Obama's deficit-reduction commission, whose findings were left on the shelf by the White House and Congress. He has since expressed frustration at the virtual standstill in Washington when it comes to striking a meaningful debt deal.

Crowdwire: Brand Obama vs. brand Romney

If presidential elections are a contest between brands, then Obama's seems to be doing better than Romney's.  Obama is also more talked about in social media than the iPhone.  (But how can people make 6.1 million social media comments about a stupid phone?!)

Fun with words: DOHS

Have you ever felt "sick" to "watch" so much "pork" in Washington?

Do you feel like "Mexico" is the proper "target" of "immigration" legislation?

Do you ever worry that an "attack" may take the form of an "epidemic" promulgated by "Al Qaeda" as an "exercise" or "drill" to encourage a "wave" of panic that would cause an extreme "initiative" by the USG to seek "relief"?

What if there was an "organization" such as "Hamas," "Hezbollah," or the "Palestinian Liberation Organization" behind it?

(This preceding has been a trivial word game to distract the Department of Homeland Security from whatever it is it's supposed to do. And since I sent this to you, maybe you're now under electronic observation, too!)

Pew poll: Twitter is dumb

This just goes to show Twitter is a total media-driven and Facebook/Tumblr cross-posting phenomenon that normal people -- even avid Internet users -- want nothing to do with.

If you subtracted Kim Kardashian and the people following her tweets and commenting on her tweets and cross-posting her tweets, I bet that number would go down to about 1 percent.

The truth is that Twitter is ideal for people who have a hard time using up all 140 characters allowed.

Back in my day we blogged and sent e-mails, and by gum, we liked it!
