An annual tradition: And the poorest states are...

In 2013, I neglected one of my annual rituals: reminding everybody that the poorest U.S. states vote Republican. Nine out of 10, to be exact, and that's backed up by PolitiFact.  Here it is, the Top 10 list of shame:

10. Oklahoma
9.  South Carolina
8.  Louisiana
7.  Tennessee
6.  New Mexico - The only state in the top 10 not in the South. West side represent!
5.  Kentucky - Just like in neighboring Tennessee, 1/4 of children live in poverty.
4.  Alabama - Median household income: $41,574, despite having the lowest property tax, and being the second most religious state.
3.  West Virginia
2.  Arkansas
1.  Mississippi - Median household income: $37,095. Official motto: "Making other states feel better about themselves."

Next in the ritual comes the part when I remind you how Red States are also more likely to be federal welfare queens, i.e. they receive more federal money than they pay to Washington in taxes.

This year I'll offer a rebuttal to that: Granted, if you look at all elections, or number of registered Republicans, and not just how these states voted in presidential races, then defining a "Red State" gets trickier. But since Republicans and Democrats use the same Red-Blue state labels, that argument doesn't hold much water with me.

Finally, I conclude this ritual by lamenting all those poor, hypocritical reactionaries in Flyover Country who vote against their own economic interests.

Till next year!....

Tennessee losing the PR war for America

Thanks, Murfreesboro, TN for making Americans look like a bunch of intolerant redneck clowns. Again.

How many America-haters did this town and this bigoted judge create, I wonder?  How many Americans in Afghanistan and elsewhere will face reprisals because of state-sanctioned discrimination against Muslims in Tennessee?

Anyway... happy Ramadan!

KY: Raiders of the Lost Park

Two Tennessee cities didn't see any financial sense in building a Bible Park, but doggoneit, that's not going to stop Kentucky from encountering an Ark!

Who needs financial sense when you've got horse sense and Yahweh as your pitchman? $37 million in state support shall be done. God shall provide! (Philippians 4:19).

(With the benefit of 4,000 to 10,000 years of hindsight, it's amazing to think the original Ark even got off the ground without a generous subsidy, municipal bond, or at least a greenfield industrial park. It truly was a miracle!)

Tenn. against bailout, for subsidies to VW

Disgusting.  Whatever happened to Congress defending the national interest, instead of whoring up with taxpayer dollars to any foreign company promising to bring jobs to the Home State?

Stunts like this lay bare the self-serving cynicism and hypocrisy of those "free market defenders" in the GOP.  The free market doesn't play favorites to foreign companies with our tax money.

Auto workers union head questions VW subsidies

December 12, 2008  |  Chattanooga Times Free Press

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said today that U.S. automobile companies are being put at a disadvantage by government in competing against Volkswagen's new auto assembly plant in Chattanooga.

The union leader questioned why government leaders in Tennessee are willing to provide assistance to the German-based Volkswagen while the state's U.S. senators declined to back a federal loan to help the Big Three U.S. car makers.

Mr. Gettelfinger said that trying to equalize UAW pay with what foreign car makers pay in the United States, as urged by U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., is like comparing apples to oranges. In its home country, Germany provides government-paid health care for Volkswagen workers, and VW is receiving $577.4 million in tax breaks and direct assistance from Tennessee governments to build an automobile plant in Chattanooga.

"They use taxpayer dollars to subsidize our competition," Mr. Gettelfinger said during a news conference. "It doesn't help our industry."
