Newsweek: World's best countries

Newsweek chose five categories of national well-being — education, health, quality of life, economic competitiveness, and political environment — and compiled metrics within these categories across 100 nations. A weighted formula yielded an overall list of the world's top 100 countries.

Not surprisingly, Nordic socialist paradises took the top 3 spots. Canada was 7th. The U.S. was 11th, a step ahead of Germany. The two countries the U.S. occupies didn't make the top 100. Croatia was 28th, just barely beating out Poland. The birthplace of Borat was a very nice 61st, considering.

For all we hear about China and India's economyic dynamism, they are still not places you'd want to live. They finished 59th and 78th, respectively.

And mighty Ukraine was 49th, ahead of all other ex-Soviet states except the Baltics. It was also the highest ranked poor country. Молодці!
