Myths and realities of high-speed rail

High-speed rail has become one of those issues, like gun control and abortion rights, that seem to cleanly separate U.S. liberals from conservatives.

Why is that?  Whatever it is, it's something relatively recent, because up until WWII the United States had the most advanced passenger railway system in world. And our freight railway system is still "the envy of the world," carrying more than 40 percent of U.S. intercity cargo.
