While Bush was still our president, 13.2 percent of Americans (40 million) were living in poverty, in the richest, most powerful country in the history of civilization. Before you go blaming that number on 3-4 months of recession, keep in mind the poverty rate was still an unacceptable 12.5 percent in 2007.
With the worst economy since the Great Depression, the number of Americans living in poverty will rise in 2009. Now is not the time to cut spending on food aid, education, and health care for poor mothers and children.
